The giant cocoon houses scientific research - but with a difference! It will open up the Natural History Museum's research and collections to the public. Thousands of researchers from around the world will work within the cocoon. It will house a world-class insectarium with over 17 million insects. Plant research won't be too shabby either with over 3 million plant specimens at hand. The cocoon provides a controlled environment which will be a safe habitat for all the specimens. The cocoon is home to the most innovative high tech laboratories. Scientists will be conducting malaria research within this building. Two hundred scientists will also work on UK and other research projects within this cocoon. This cocoon will awaken a love for science in each and every one of its visitors. The giant cocoon is fascinating on many levels. The new cocoon will be the architectural highlight of the Natural History Museum.The cocoon is indeed a spectacular addition to London architecture. The cocoon measures 65 metres long and 8 stories high. It actually breaks some previously records. It is the largest sprayed concrete, curved structure in Europe. Its 30 steel columns are 28 metres long. No columns of such a length have ever before being transported through London. This free standing structure inside a glass atrium was designed by the C.F. M?ller architectural team lead by partner Anna Maria Indrio. The cocoon design fits the natural history theme and replicates an organic form. The network of "silk threads" provide for movement and provides a visual framework for openings. This giant cocoon is an outstanding achievement in both design and technical solutions. It is a breathtaking and original structure. The giant cocoon at the Natural History Museum is a milestone achievement with world-class scientific research. It is indeed the star of London's Natural History Museum.
